Structural Parts Steel Welding Qualification Series (SPS05)

The Structural Parts Steel Welding Qualification Series covers the principles and techniques of structural steel sectioning. This series builds on fundamentals covered in the Steel GMA (MIG) Welding Series. Welding principles, equipment setup, and preparation are reviewed. Additional principles covered include measuring, cutting, and part alignment before hands-on practice and testing.

Practice includes measuring, cutting, and welding to include plug, offset fillet, and butt joint with backing welds. Techniques are practiced in flat, vertical, and overhead positions followed by visual inspection according to strict guidelines.

The program concludes with the Structural Parts Steel Welding Qualification Test demonstrating the technician’s ability to perform proper steel part sectioning.

About Testing

Working with a simulated structural part made of automotive grade steel (18 gauge), performance-based testing includes measuring, cutting, and aligning structural parts. Joints are welded in place with offset fillet, butt joint with backing, and plug welds in flat, vertical, and overhead positions.

To pass the test, a participant’s sectioned test part must fit into a specially-designed I-CAR fixture. The allowable tolerance has been built in to the fixture. If any pin on the fixture does not fit into the reference hole on the test part, it will not qualify. Welds are visually inspected following strict guidelines. Methods used to evaluate a passing rail are explained during the practice sessions.

Certificate of Qualification

I-CAR awards eight points and issues a certificate for students who pass the Structural Parts Steel Welding Qualification Test. It is necessary to re-qualify within five years to maintain this status.
